The Community Allotment came into being in January 2009 when Tunbridge Wells Borough Council gave us permission to clear an overgrown, disused allotment plot to develop into a Community Allotment.
Anyone is welcome to join in, whether you're an experienced gardener, or have never tried to grow anything before. It's ideal if you're thinking about getting an allotment and would like to see how it's done and it's much more fun than digging alone!

If you're on the waiting list for a council allotment, come and join in with us and develop your skills until one's available.

A small hard-working team spent the first part of 2009 strimming and digging out the head-height brambles that formerly coverred the site, but there is always plenty more to do. We have cleared about 1/2 of the site and created retaining walls out of recycled materials to make terraces as it's quite a sloping site.

In the permanent beds we already have blackcurrants, raspberries and rhubarb. Last year we grew onions, potatoes, beetroot, lettuce, broad beans and courgettes as well as peas and lettuce and we have now planned the crops we will be growing this year.

We now have a shed so we can make tea, and have also constructed two compost bins and are just about to connect up the waterbutt to the shed guttering.

The Food Group holds meetings about every two weeks - we discuss the plans for the allotment as well as other local food initiatives, and anyone is welcome to come and get involved.

Please feel free to come and help (wellies and a fork/spade would be useful) or just come for a chat to find out more about Transition Tunbridge Wells.

The allotment site is on the left hand side of King George V Hill (going away from town) and is the 3rd allotment along.
